Friday Mindset #94

Helping students get better at studenting

Happy Friday on this, surely the finest of all Fridays. The Queen of Fridays, the High Princess of Fridays… the Indiana Jones of Fridays.

Remember our promise to shower you with gifts? Yes, that’s right, it’s time for the four free activities that folks seemed to like the most - or hate the least, depending upon your perspective - from the last academic year. That’s newsletter 60 through to 93, roughly 19,000 words of blather. Blimey.

Let’s dive in… stuff you might have missed this year, a top four… (*drum-roll*)

FOUR

We had some nice comments about our simple, short powerpoint inspired by Derek Sivers’ observation that identities expire. It’s a good one for students who need fresh starts, students who are undergoing a conscious, study-focussed reinvention, or those who want new narratives about themselves to improve self-talk.

THREE

You guys seemed to enjoy the session about pre-mortems as well. That is to say, we got a good few thumbs up… and no actual abuse. Which is a massive win in our book. We’ve used it a number of times with low effort students who self-sabotage as they try to improve their levels of commitment. It’s a good one.

TWO

Our presentation about kids practising went down a treat. ie we weren’t attacked in the street and someone sent a nice email. The videos in this one are amusing, cute and interesting… but importantly, remind us all just how much effort and focus we put into practice during our early years. It’s a good reminder too that practice involves operating at the edge of one’s ability, making mistakes and trying again.

ONE

And finally, a bona-fide gold-plated hit - it got the most positive feedback this year - was our presentation about the penny-a-day effect. It explores the idea that consistency beats intensity through a vivid and memorable illustration of how small things compound.

Right, our business here is concluded.

Go forth and drown yourself in artisanal ice-cream, you beautiful people.

See you on September 8th! All the best to you and yours,
